HIM & HER

Brennan’s Nose Surgery

This title is way more dramatic than it really needs to be, but if we’re being honest…I wasn’t very open with what was really going down this past August.

Not because I didn’t want to be, but truly because I wasn’t sure how to handle the situation via social media, and it wasn’t only my situation to be shared.

Brennan is super active and plays on multiple sports teams throughout the week. Two softball teams, and sometimes two basketball teams. It’s an amazing way for him to stay in shape and keep up with the thousands of friends he has (kidding but not really), but at the end of the day…it’s also a great way to get hurt.

You see where this is going by now don’t you? WELL…

One Wednesday night I was at home awaiting his return from basketball, and just as I was walking up from the gym a call from his cell came in.

I’ll never forget hearing his voice say “hi babe”, but then another person’s voice take over with “Brennan is hurt pretty badly, his nose is broken and we’re taking him to the ER.”

I know it’s not as bad as other calls as people have received, but nonetheless my heart sank and I immediately ran for my car.

Driving to the ER was one of the scariest 15 minutes I’ve had in a long time. Your mind starts running wild and you think about all of the worst possible scenarios.

Thankfully when I arrived I was greeted with a much less scary version of what I concocted on my drive over, but it was still a site to be seen.

Basically, the bridge of Brennan’s nose was knocked sideways by a very unforgiving elbow. Him and his teammate both jumped for the ball at the same time, and well…you can probably imagine what happened from there.

Before Surgery

One of the most frustrating things about this entire thing (aside from the fact that the ER obviously made us wait 3 hours before simply saying “take some pain killers and try to see a doctor tomorrow”) was that when we did get a hold of Brennan’s doctor, they wouldn’t even see him for 3 WEEKS.

By that time we were so paranoid that the bone would already be set and healing incorrectly. Not to mention the pain he’d have to suffer through in the mean time.

After frustrating calls to the doctor to do our best to be seen as soon as possible, we finally got in for an appointment. Again, the doctor said he couldn’t work on Brenna’s nose for weeks. So here we were: frustrated, defeated, and Brennan in an immense amount of pain.

It wasn’t until Brennan was recommended to Dr. Jason Roostaeian that things started to finally work in our favor.

Dr. Jason was able to get Brennan in the next day to assess the damage. And ohhhh boy was there damage.

Though it didn’t look quite that scary from the outside, there was a whole lot going on under the surface. A bone from Brennan’s nose was completely broken, and he had a deviated septum. Not the best combo.

It wasn’t a matter of just snapping it back into place; there was a lot of work to be done.

Dr. Jason was eager to get him into surgery (thank GOD) so within a matter of days it was go time.

Surgery day was effortless on our end. We went in, got prepped, and were briefed by a few nurses and Dr. Jason himself about what was going to happen in surgery.

Brennan went in, and I went to the family waiting area.

After about an hour and a half Brennan was in the recovery room. Understandably, he was pretty out of it. His pain level was moderate, but he was eager to get home and into his own bed.

The nurses had us stay for about 30 minutes so they could monitor him for a bit, but then we were off to start one of the hardest weeks we’d face as a couple thus far.

Though the surgery felt effortless, the recovery was a lot of work. I was not prepared whatsoever (I had to do a quick store run to get things he could actually eat), and Brennan was completely reliant on my assistance for 2 full days, which we didn’t expect either.

After 2 full days of sleeping as much as possible, shades drawn, lights off, and falling asleep to Harry Potter on tape…Brennan was finally able to get up and walk around a bit.

It’s so hard to see your significant other in such a state of pain that you have no control over, but seeing Dr. Jason’s results made that week completely worth it.

After Surgery

Brennan’s nose looks completely unaltered and is strong as ever (according to Dr. Jason – obviously haha); we could not be more elated with the outcome of this unexpected event, and will forever stand behind the work of Dr. Jason.

Not only is he welcoming and reassuring, but he is extremely skilled in his practice. He told Brennan this is one of the worse cases he’s come across, but was excited to take on the challenge. He far exceeded our expectations, and quite frankly worked wonders on Brennan’s nose.

It’s so hard when you are faced with the reality that your face may look different than what it’s been your entire life, and to have a doctor confidently take on the job of putting things back together (literally) so that you’ll be happy with the results is the most reassuring thing ever.

Dr. Jason and his staff made this process way easier than we thought it would be, and I just had to thank them via blog post because if we’re being honest, August 2019 was dang hard.

It wasn’t something I could post about on social media because 1) duh, Brennan was in excruciating pain and 2) it wasn’t necessarily my story to tell at that point…especially when we didn’t know what we were up against in the beginning.

So in an effort to let you guys in on the not-so-glamorous side of our everyday lives, I wanted to write this open post about how August REALLY happened 🙂

And fun side note – August was when I went to Tulum, and it was the hardest thing to leave Brennan halfway into his recover. I was so worried about him and felt terrible to be jetting off to have a great vacation while he was home in bed 5 days after nose surgery…but the best part is that was the week he went and looked at engagement rings! Sneaky, selfless fiancé of mine who I love so much. Even in his most painful time, he was working some magic behind the scenes 😉

Head to Dr. Jason’s instagram to see before and after’s of Brennan’s nose!

You can also visit his website to see what other procedures he performs. I think I’m going to visit him for some botox of my own (LOL) so stay tuned!
