Fashion [History] Friday

“Today in 1957, newly elected president of the Model’s Mutual Aid Society, Lucy “Lucky” Janishevski, recommended that her fellow models begin a regimen of a strict diet and exercise.” –Stylitics

It was this day that literally transformed the fashion world. Models started getting skinnier, and curves stopped being beautiful in the harsh eyes of many. We stopped seeing true, organic beauty on the covers of our magazines, on the billboards of our streets, and on the runways of our fashion capitals. The expectations rose to nearly unattainable measures, and self-judgement and comparison to these models started to hinder men and women’s opinions of themselves.

Luckily some fashion brands and magazines have started to turn back to our roots and embrace the curves. Aerie (American Eagle’s lingerie brand), is the most recent brand to launch a campaign promoting models who have remained untouched by Photoshop. Read more about “Aerie Real” here. I hope that this sets the pace for other fashion brands to come; we need to remember to embrace our true, natural beauty because we are all made in the eyes of our Creator and He loves us beyond comparison. No matter what magazines define as beauty, YOU are beauty.
