Shake & Bake

I’m not much of a cook. Baking, j’adore. Cooking, still trying to figure it all out. The fact that I am currently in a cooking class at school has helped slightly, but I’m still pretty foreign to this domesticated art. Each week we learn how to prepare different foods, and today we were focussing on how to cook different types of meat. Somehow my group finished early and we decided we were done with the meats, only to move on to a more sophisticated dish: Onion Rings. I decided to spring at the opportunity and document the process for your entertainment, and hopefully to inspire you to make your own little treats!

Ingredients needed:

  • 1 Onion
  • 1 Egg
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1/3 cup bread crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons oil

Materials needed:

  • 2 large plastic bags
  • Frying pan
  • Mixing bowl
  • Knife
  • Cutting board

First, mix the salt, pepper, and flour into the large plastic bag.

In the second plastic bag, pour the bread crumbs in.

Second, mix egg and milk together in mixing bowl.

Next, prepare your onion. Peel the skin off, and separate the layers into rings.

(Now would be a good time to turn your stove onto high heat to heat up the 2 tablespoons of oil in the frying pan. Be sure to keep your eye on it so the oil does not burn).

Add your uncooked union rings into the bag with the flour/salt/pepper mixture first.

Once they are completely covered, remove them and put them into the mixing bowl with the egg and milk. Stir them around until the egg has coated each onion ring.

Next, place the rings into the bag with the bread crumbs. The more shaking of the bag, the more bread crumbs that will stick to the onions. (the more bread crumbs, the more crunch!)

After the bread crumbs are covering the onions, it is time to move them onto the stove.Image

Your oil should be very hot, so be careful! Turn the stove down to a medium heat. Cook each side of the onion, making sure the bread crumbs appear brown but not burnt.

Carefully remove the onion rings from the hot oil, and place them onto a plate that is covered with a paper towel to soak up excess oil.

Let cool, then enjoy!
