WHERE WE WENT: CABO TRAVEL GUIDE

It’s 2021, but the state of the world hasn’t changed a ton quite yet. With the promise of vaccines well on their way throughout the US, I’ve grown extremely anxious to get out and travel. Mark my words – the second it’s safe (and worth it) to go back to Europe, I’M OUT. I’ve already told Brennan we’ll be traveling at least 3 months in Europe to get our fix in and make up for lost travel haha.

In 2019, it felt like I was traveling every single month, but I never really blogged about any of it! Starting with Cabo in February 2019; I thought it would be fun to roll out all of the pending travel guides I have yet to publish, starting with trip number 1.

Since travel isn’t currently a focal point in my (or anyone’s) life, going through the archives is the only thing keeping me sane.

Hopefully by the time borders are reopened, I’ll have all my guides up to better serve you and your travels 🙂

Without further adieu, here is my Cabo Travel Guide:
what to do in cabo

TRAVEL

The fight to Cabo was SO quick and easy. You’re just in the air for 2 hours if you leave from LAX. Extremely easy and just one flight. We flew into Cabo San Lucas (SJD) and booked a private shuttle to take us to our first hotel; highly recommend! There are a ton of options if you check google.

ACCOMODATIONS

For the first half of our trip we stayed at Acre Baja; though the weather was really nice in February during the day, it got FRIGID at night. We were told this wasn’t typical, but nonetheless we were absolutely frozen in our tree houses.

Acre is absolutely charming; the grounds are pristine and lush with greenery, the pool is chic and minimal, and the treehouses are so fun – but a few things to note:

+ Staying in a tree house is pretty much like camping; you’re subject to the environment. Bugs, wind, cold, heat, rain – whatever you encounter will follow you into your treehouse.

+ Showers are outdoors on your porch. And from what I remember the water was cold. I literally didn’t wash my hair until we got to our next hotel because I could not handle being so cold AND outside.

+ It’s pretty far from the main part of town, so if you’re wanting something walkable, this is not it. We had to take a taxi every time we wanted to go into town which upped costs a tiny bit more.

After 2 nights in the treehouses we ultimately decided we needed to change hotels. It was just too cold and we were dreading each night. This ended up being a blessing in disguise though, because we were able to partner with one of my now favorite hotels: The Bahia Resort.

It’s owned by an incredible couple who really paid attention to detail in every corner of the hotel.

The rooms are amazing, the hotel restaurant, Bar Esquina, is exquisite, and the coffee shop is AMAZING. We would wake up and work downstairs with our iced chai teas every morning and it was the best way to start off the day.

Their pool is also really cool but we spent more time on the beach. SUR Beach House is also affiliated with the hotel, which is an amazing spot for lunch right on the beach; we reserved a private beach lounge area that gave us a somewhat private experience (the beach in front of the hotel is public, unlike places like The Cape Hotel which I also highly recommend).

DINING

We didn’t explore a ton of restaurants on our trip, but we did really enjoy eating at the Acre Baja hotel restaurant and Bahia Hotel restaurant. We did venture into town to find some hole in the wall spots that were recommended to us, but I cannot remember the names for the life of me! Listing a few great options below:

+ LUNCH

Sur Beach House

Bar Esquina

Acre Baja hotel restaurant

The Rooftop at The Cape Hotel – $$-$$$

Flora Farms – $$$

+ DINNER

Manta at The Cape Hotel – $$$$

Sunset Monalisa – $$$$

Always check out Travel Advisor’s top ranked restaurants for wherever you’re traveling, then ask around once you get there! Make sure to chat with locals if you can; when we asked the valet at The Cape Hotel for dinner recommendations on our way out, they directed us to a huge, crowded spot that felt VERY touristy. It almost felt like they had a deal to recommend the restaurant because of how many people were there. Did not feel authentic whatsoever. We left immediately and looked for a local taco shop instead, and it was such a better experience.

ACTIVITIES

Since we went to Cabo for work, we did spend quite a bit of time shooting, but when we decided it was time to play instead of work here are a few activities we did:

+ Boat ride into the bay for a scenic view / sunset cruise; music, friends, beverages – it’s a blast. One fo the heights of our trip. SUP Cabo is what we went through – connected thanks to the Bahia hotel.

+ Lounge on the private beach at The Cape Hotel – we did this one day and it was honestly my favorite part of the trip. We went to the hotel to shoot and ended up staying all day and night. We got a bottle of rosé for sunset and just took in the beauty of Cabo right from the sand. It was magical.

+ Boat ride to Divorce Beach – this is a tourist site right off the beach; to be honest Michelle and I got completely conned on our first ticket purchase – they told us to walk down to the beach and we’d see the boat we paid for, but that definitely didn’t happen. We ended up paying another person right on the beach to take us over to see the area on their boat. Another sketchy thing is that they basically say “okay be back in an hour” and you just have to pray they come back for you. If I’m being honest, I wouldn’t really recommend doing this. It was cool but it’s literally just a mini island with nothing on it but sand and giant rocks – if you’re into rock climbing then this would be a really cool spot, but otherwise I think you’re better off just taking a boat tour!

+ Check the happenings the Bahia hotel posts about prior to your trip; things like Mezcal tastings and whale watching are just a few examples!
